Spaghetti & Marshmallows

Engineering Week!

It was Engineering Week. Engineers help us to live our lives every day. We tried to be engineers for a day. We wanted to make our own structures.

What Did We Use?

We used spaghetti and marshmallows to help us to build our structures.

How Did We Do It?

We were in groups of 3. Each group got 15 strands of spaghetti, 15 mini marshmallows and 1 large marshmallow. We had to plan our structures before we started constructing.

What Did we Build?

The highest structure we built measured 38cm.

What Did We Learn?

We learned to put the big marshmallow on the bottom to help support the structure.

We decided a square base was the best.

We found out it was helpful to have some strands going diagonal to help support the structure.

We discovered that the spaghetti is very fragile and broke very easily.

The marshmallows were very sticky.

We learned that we had to make some changes along the way so our finished structure wasn’t exactly as we had planned.

What Did We Do Next?

Having built our own structures we went to Senior Infants to help them build structures. We learned a lot of things when we did it ourselves so we were able to do a better job with Senior Infants.

The highest structure we made with Senior Infants was 48cm.

We found it easier to build the second time.

It was hard in the beginning but we had such fun making them!
