Weather

We learnt about the weather this week. Did you know weather is made up of  clouds,  temperature, wind and rain??

We found out  northerly winds bring cold and harsh and bitter weather because they come from the North Pole. Westerly winds travel from America and usually bring cool and wet weather. Winds from the south bring warm, mild weather because they come from the equator.

There is lots of fog today. Easterly winds bring fog to Ireland.

There are four types of clouds.

Cumulus clouds, alto clouds, cirrus clouds and stratus clouds. Alto clouds are usually grey, soft and puffy and they stretch out across the sky in waves.Cumulus clouds are soft ,fluffy clouds that look like balls of cotton wool. Cirrus clouds are made from ice and are very long clouds and come with fair and pleasant weather. Stratus clouds are fluffy ,grey and can look like fog.

Temperature

Temperature measures how hot or cold something is. You use a thermometer to measure the temperature outside. You can use a thermometer to measure the temperature of your body and how hot your food is.

Did you know Sleet is a mixture between rain and snow . Snow occurs when water in the clouds become very cold and freezes to form crystals.

The  Water Cycle

The sun shines on the water in rivers, lakes and the sea. It heats it up so it turns into vapour.

The vapour rises into the sky and gets cold.

In the sky it turns into droplets and turns into clouds.

The clouds get too heavy and the droplets fall as rain or snow or hail or sleet.
